OUR STORY
It all started in 2016, when we thought it would be a good idea to offer cheese to our booth visitors. It was a miserable fail …
But then it went uphill from there. Hello! We’re …
Laila Hassaballa
We started this business because food was (and still remains to be) our favorite way to explore a new place authentically. Before that, we worked in the graphic design field for 6 years, but we first met years before that when we studied together.
MARIAM (MIA) NEZAR
Then we decided to do something about our love for food, but the food blogging market was pretty saturated, and we realized we can positively impact the food scene in a much more experiential method. So we started Bellies En-Route.
“We believe there’s more to food than just eating.”
Year One
We prototyped our tour while we still worked full-time jobs. And as soon as we quit, came year two …
Year Two
We were luckily featured on The Independent, followed by BBC’s Travel show, followed by John Torode’s Middle East on the Good Food Channel and others!
Year Three
We started the year by hiring Amir, who joined Bellies En-Route to feed more people (and kick-ass).
Meet Amir!
Tour guide & home cook
Amir Bishara is a passionate cook and loves spending time with people. He sings in the Cairo Celebration Choir and his favorite dish is spaghetti Bolognese. One of the reasons why we hired Amir was because of his amazing curls that definitely gave ours a run for their money, but you only get to see them on tour, thanks to that chef’s hat.
Soon after, we grew further, with 2 lovely ladies joining our team too.
this is mariam
tour guide & artist
Mariam El Nahas is an aspiring artist with a passion for food & cooking. She loves discovering new cuisines and experimenting with different ingredients. Mariam enjoys sharing meals with people from all over the world . She believes that food is the way to everyone’s heart. Mariam’s favorite Egyptian dish is Koshary.
AND THIS IS nancy
tour guide & film-producer
Nancy Eid is enthusiastic about food and film. When she’s not taking guests on tour, she’s part of an incredible team that produces award-winning films in Cairo and organizes retreats for artists and film makers.
THANKFULLY, OUR SMALL BUSINESS SURVIVED COVID-19, and despite the challenge, our team is growing further!
MEET AMR
TOUR GUIDE & entrepreneur
Amr loves exploring new opportunities and fresh initiatives just as much as he loves trying new food. A jack-of-all-trades, Amr has experience providing trainings, consulting, and even volunteering with school children in India! He loves traveling to explore new cuisines and cultures. Amr Believes that food is one of the most unique ways to connect with any human. His favorite dish remains to be a mystery until this day, but as soon as we know it we will surely let you know.
LAST BUT NOT LEAST, THIS IS NUR
TOUR GUIDE & LINGUIST
Nur is a keen linguist who believes that food and language are a firm door to knowing any culture thoroughly. She thinks of language in terms of puzzle and food in terms of color and richness. A bosslady, Nur started her own business in the localisation and interpreting industry 3 years ago. She likes to travel and learn new languages, one of which is food, which, to quote her, “is a language on its own.” Nur’s favorite dish is gambas al ajillo, which she learned how to cook on one of her many trips to Spain!
